Publication Requirements for the "History Journal of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University"

The journal adheres to international standards for academic writing according to the APA style (7th edition). Articles are published in the author’s edition.

1. Technical Parameters of the Manuscript

• Length:

  • Research article: ~0.5 author’s sheet (~20,000 characters with spaces, including abstracts and references).

  • Book review / Short report: Up to 0.25 author’s sheet (~10,000 characters with spaces).

• Format and Font: A4, Times New Roman, 14 pt font size.

• Spacing and Margins: 1.5 line spacing; 2 cm margins on all sides.

• Paragraphs and Pages: Paragraph indent – 0.5 cm; continuous page numbering is required.

• Typography: Angle quotes (« »); en-dash (“–”) (do not confuse with a hyphen “-”).

2. Sequence of Structural Elements of the Article

1. UDC (left-aligned).

2. Article Title (in Ukrainian) – ALL CAPS, bold.

3. Author(s) (in Ukrainian): First Name & Surname, academic degree, academic rank, position, workplace (department, faculty, HEI/institution), city, country, e-mail, ORCID ID (mandatory).

4. Abstract (in Ukrainian) – at least 800 characters with spaces.

5. Keywords (in Ukrainian) – 5–8 items.

6. Title of the article (in English) – standard case, bold.

7. Author(s) (in English): Name & Surname, affiliation, city, country, ORCID ID. (Transliteration of surnames according to official rules, institutional names according to official English titles).

8. Abstract (extended in English) – at least 1,800 characters with spaces.

   Note: If the article is submitted in English, the extended abstract in Ukrainian must be at least 1,800 characters with spaces, and the English abstract must be at least 800 characters.

9. Keywords (in English) – 5–8 items.

10. Main Text of the Article (structured under compulsory headings):

    • Introduction

    • Literature Review

    • Research Aim & Objectives

    • Main Body & Results

    • Conclusions

11. References (formatted according to APA 7th edition).

3. Requirements for the Abstract

• Language: Academic English (the use of machine translation tools is prohibited).

• Content: The abstract must be an original and informative text reflecting the core essence of the study, rather than a literal translation of the Ukrainian version.

• Recommended Structure: Research aim, methodology, main results and scientific novelty, conclusions.

• Style: Avoid general phrases, overly complex introductory clauses, and descriptions of widely known facts.

4. In-Text Citations (APA 7th Edition)

All citations to academic sources must be given directly in the text in parentheses using the format (Author, Year) or (Author, Year, p. X).

The use of traditional footnotes for academic literature citations is prohibited. Phrases such as "ibid.", "ibidem", or "там само" must not be used.

Examples of in-text citations:

• One author: (Zhdan, 1973, p. 56)

• Two authors: (Tsalyk & Selihei, 2010, p. 32)

• Three or more authors: (Krypiakevych et al., 1984, p. 98)

• Archival materials and primary sources: (CDIAL, f. 146, op. 1, spr. 29, ark. 1)

5. Reference List Formatting (References)

The reference list is placed at the end of the article under the heading References. All sources must be provided in the Latin alphabet (in English or transliterated) and arranged strictly alphabetically (A–Z) according to APA 7th edition guidelines.

Key Rules:

1. Ukrainian-language sources must be transliterated into the Latin alphabet, with an English translation of the article/book title added in square brackets.

2. For Ukrainian text transliteration, use the official service: Passport Transliteration (CMU Resolution No. 55).

3. DOI must be provided for all sources where available (formatted as [https://doi.org/10.xxxx/xxxx](https://doi.org/10.xxxx/xxxx)).

1. Journal Article

   • Schema: Surname, I. (Year). Title of article transliterated [Title translation in English]. Journal Title Transliterated, Volume(Issue), pages. https://doi.org/...

   • Example: Zhdan, M. (1973). Romanovychi i Nimetskyi Khrestonosnyi orden [Romanovychi and the German Crusader Order]. Ukrainskyi istoryk, 10(3–4), 56–62.

2. Monograph / Book

   • Schema: Surname, I. (Year). Book title transliterated [Title translation in English]. Publisher.

   • Example: Krypiakevych, I. (1984). Halytsko-Volynske kniazivstvo [Galician-Volyn principality]. Naukova dumka.

3. Book Chapter / Edited Collection Section

   • Schema: Surname, I. (Year). Title of chapter transliterated [Title translation]. In I. Surname (Ed.), Collection title transliterated (pp. pages). Publisher.

   • Example: Tsalyk, S. (2010). Pro shcho zmovchaly biohrafy Mykoly Bazhana [What biographers of Mykola Bazhan were silent about]. In S. Tsalyk & P. Selihei (Eds.), Tiemnytsi pysmenskykh shukhliad... (pp. 32–35). Nash chas.

4. Historical Newspapers & Periodicals

5. Archival Sources

   • Example: Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv (CDIAL). Fund 146 (Galician Lieutenancy), Inventory 1, File 29 (Report of the Lieutenancy on the election of deputies), Sheet 1.

6. Peer Review Process and Publication Ethics

All manuscripts submitted to the editorial board undergo an initial screening for compliance with the journal’s scope, technical formatting requirements, and academic integrity (screened for plagiarism using specialized software).

Following the initial screening, articles undergo Double-Blind Peer Review by two independent external experts. The final decision regarding publication is made by the editorial board.
