Abstract

The article deals with the section of theology — homiletics, which is devoted to the preparation and delivery of sermons. Formal homiletics studies the principles of rhetoric in relation to pastoral preaching. The topics of the sermons are most often borrowed from the Holy Scriptures, and the sermons are divided into doctrinal and moral, declarative and pastoral (addressed to the faithful), thematic and textual, explanatory and those preached on special occasions. It is emphasized that the function of church guidance was not limited to giving a Christian a theological title and teaching him the basics of faith. The task of the preachers was to give practical knowledge of how the truths of the creed can and should be realized in the life of each creed. Attention is also drawn to the influence of Protestant and Catholic preaching on Orthodox preaching, in accordance with the conditions in which the Orthodox Church found itself within the Commonwealth of Nations.

It is pointed out that one of the most significant tools for the formation of confessional consciousness, which included the idea of what a perfect Christian should be, was church teaching, carried out primarily through the community of believers. In contrast to purely theological works, accessible and understandable only to an educated minority, preaching was one of the most mass and consumer products of culture. She familiarized the Christian with the basic truths of the creed, flexibly adapting to the level of her listeners, explaining the most complex theological problems in an accessible form, using examples and images from living everyday experience. In the era of self-determination of Christian denominations, the content of the sermon became more theologically saturated, as close as possible to the official church doctrine; it seeks to convey the smallest nuances that distinguish this doctrine from the interpretation of the creed by other Christian denominations. The church authorities monitored this, paying great attention to the preaching activity of the parish clergy.
